The election results are in! Oscar the Porcupine has claimed the title of Mayor of Blank Park Zoo in a landslide victory against opponents Deuce the Lion and Kitsi the Snow Monkey. The campaign for mayor has been an exciting one, attracting attention and endorsements from multiple central Iowa mayors, alongside smiles from the public. Throughout it all, Oscar has been a favorite of voters thanks to his one-in-a-quillion personality.

Oscar received in impressive 74% of the vote. Deuce received 17% and Kitsi 9%. The election helped raise $2,000 for Blank Park Zoo. Funds will go toward animal care and conservation efforts, supporting the only AZA (American Zoos & Aquariums) Accredited zoo in Iowa.

A well-known animal ambassador, Oscar ran on an education-based platform.

"Oscar will continue to travel the state and spread the zoo's mission," shared campaign manager Julia Bingham. "He'll educate people about all the animals back at the zoo and how they can help."

Oscar's mate, Edda, is preparing to step into her role as the first lady of Blank Park Zoo. She's currently training to join the ambassador animal team, where she can help support all zoo residents.

There is no word on how Oscar plans to enact his other campaign promise: snacks and naps for all.

Oscar was excited to help garner attention for upcoming education programs. You can join zoo staff virtually for their Hope For the Wild Youtube series this Friday at 3pm. Attendance is free, but they do ask you reserve your spot here. Guests will learn about Eastern Black Rhinoceros and have a chance to chat with keepers afterwards.

A favorite of the zoo education team, Discover the Wild returns to the zoo next Sunday, November 17th from 10am-2pm. Keepers will be on-site to teach guests about turtles, tortoises and how the two are different from one another. Discover the Wild presentations are included in admission.
