URBANDALE, Iowa — The Urbandale City Council officially adopted a new city flag Tuesday following a comprehensive design process and months of public input.
The flag features six U-shapes in white and light blue intertwined to form a star on a dark blue background.
The interlocking U-shapes symbolize unity within the city, while the colors represent the two counties where Urbandale is expanding. The star against the dark blue background is meant to look like a firework, representing Urbandale's annual Fourth of July celebration.
"This flag is not just a symbol; it's a declaration of Urbandale’s bright and bold future,” said Mayor Bob Andeweg in a statement. “It’s a striking emblem that will inspire and unite our community for generations to come."
The Flag Design Committee received more than 400 potential designs from Urbandale community members, which were then narrowed down to five.
Then, in April, the city asked residents to rate each of the final flag designs. More than 500 people participated in the survey process.
"This flag represents the collaborative effort of our residents and the pride we all share in our city," Andeweg said.
Residents can purchase flag merchandise, including flags, mugs, t-shirts and stickers, at Urbandale City Hall.
