'It is unsettling': April 26 tornado destroys Creston family's farmstead, grain bin

When a tornado passed through Creston Friday night, it left a devastating line of damage, including at the Hartman's family farm.

CRESTON, Iowa — A total of 19 tornadoes touched down in Iowa Friday night, including two EF-1 and two EF-2 tornadoes in the Creston area.

One of those EF-1 tornadoes ripped through Jerry and Laura Hartman's property, leaving a devastating trail of damage.

One of the Hartman's neighbors, Vince Taylor, captured that tornado moments before it hit the Hartman's property.

"You're thinking all the time about what is happening above you. Is the house all of a sudden going to come down on your head? And will you be alright? And how is that all going to work? So yeah, it is unsettling," Laura Hartman told Local 5 News on Tuesday.

The Hartman's home took siding and window damage, but the tornado did most of its destruction to the family's farmstead and 50-foot grain bin.

The bin was left crushed on the ground, a couple trees were uprooted from the ground and sheds were blown off their foundation.

But the most surprising moment from Friday's storm involved the family's horse, Buddy.

"We didn't know where he was and that was probably the most shocking part when we discovered him in the only part of the shed that didn't have a roof on the ground basically," Hartman explained.

To free Buddy from entrapment, they had to chainsaw a hole in the shed. Luckily, Buddy and the Hartman's all made it through the storm unscathed.

Laura Hartman said she has lived in the home most of her life, as it's a multigenerational farm. She said Friday's tornado reminded her of a similar one from the '70s when her father would tell everyone to go to the basement "for safety," which is exactly what she did Friday.

Hartman said Friday night's tornado that passed right over her home, shook the house "like a house shouldn't move." She mentioned she could feel the walls shaking almost as if "a train passed by."

Since Friday after the tornado passed, the Hartmans have documented all the damages, hoping insurance will help cover their rebuilding efforts.
